E3: Post Event Coverage

E3 2014 has come and gone and this year was filled with treats and goodies and plenty of fan service. Everything had a “we’re taking next gen by storm and applying what we know you want to it” vibe and that is totally okay. Fan service is something that’s been lacking in the past few E3s and now it seems that the folks at our favorite developers are putting their best foot forward. As noted online, in other forums and press releases, the central theme has been directed towards “you”, taking note of what the gamer wants and applying it to what will come next. Some examples of this would be the announcement video for Mass Effect 4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VahXsFfidEw) and the reveal of Halo Master Chief Collection for next gen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPGPiSpTw4w). A return to old school was also apparent,Image especially with the reveal of Rainbow Six Siege (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wlvYh0h63k), which will replace RS Patriots which was announced a few years ago. Siege will feature a more old school approach to the franchise and multiplayer, featuring smaller teams of SWAT and terrorists in a strategic and tense looking scenario, which can be viewed below. I was also really happy with the whole 20 seconds of Star Wars Battlefront footage shown (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yKv45X_OIo), with the addition of the developers going to the original filming locations for such iconic battles as Hoth and Endor to get the feel and atmosphere just right. I love that kind of attention to detail. Battlefield Hardline (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex1GlZS-t7c) looks to rectify the error that was BF4 while a few other releases such as Rise of the Tomb Raider,Scalebound, Uncharted 4 and Forza Horizon 2 teased us with trailers. Nintendo outdid themselves with the reveal of Starfox (let that sink in), a new Zelda title and gameplay footage of the new Pokemon re-releases. The big surprises for me are two games a bit more under the radar, one being No Man’s Sky (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLtmEjqzg7M), a PS4 exclusive at this point and the other being the wacky Sunset Overdrive (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmRR6MnS6dc), an Xbox One Exclusive, both embedded below.  There are a ton of other games that were put out such as Assassin’s Creed Unity, Far Cry 4, Destiny and The Witcher 3 and Dragon Age (fantasy fans take note of the last two) are worth mentioning as well. The disappointment came from (surprise?) Call of Duty Advance Warfare (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sRUZ9p4oYQ), which despite new gameplay mechanics, Matrix-like squidy things and a new setting and time frame, really felt like yet another rehash. Alas. In the end, this E3 was fun, full of surprises and has me wanting to make the jump to the next gen, or  current gen, whatever the kids are calling it now.
