The main event for the 4th annual Dota 2 International starts this Friday, July 18th in Seattle, Washington! This year’s tournament began on July 8th with 19 teams and has been reduced to 8 of the best teams from around the world who are competing for a prize pool of over $10,000,000! That’s right, more than ten million dollars is up for grabs making this the largest cash prize in eSports history since last year’s International broke the previous record. Valve (the game’s producers) put up an initial sum of $1,600,000 and then raised more than $8,400,000 from the game’s player base in exchange for in-game cosmetic items and other bonuses! It should also be noted that the $8,400,000 that was added to the Prize Pool is only 25% of the money they raised, meaning that Valve raked in over $30 million dollars from its users thanks to this event since it’s announcement in June.

Dota 2 is a co-operative multiplayer strategy game in which two teams of five players seek to destroy the opposing team’s strongholds using a variety of items and abilities. Given that the grand prize for the winning team of the tournament is up to $4,970,000, this means that each player on the winning team will walk away with over $990,000! The prize for the second place team is up to $1,450,000 and third place will take home a cool $1,025,000.

You can check out the International 4 from July 18th through July 21st over at the Dota 2 homepage, on Twitch and even on ESPN’s espn3 live streaming page! That’s right, a video game tournament was picked up to be shown on ESPN’s website including interviews (most notably with the beloved Gabe Newell) with the tournament organizers, highlights and the games!

The first game is scheduled to start at 12:00m EST on July 18th with Vici Gaming vs NewBee! Follow @Dota2 and #TI4 on Twitter for highlights and hype during the games.
