Entertainment Review 2014

Posted: December 27, 2014 in Uncategorized

Well another year gone and that means it’s time for another year in review! This is the fourth year I’ve done this and super grateful to hear that people are actually interested in what I think, so thanks for the love everyone! This year was generally a mediocre year overall, but there were diamonds in the rough and I’m here to tell you which ones I think they are. Enjoy and happy new year.

Best Albums

5. The Gaslight Anthem-Get Hurt

4. Judas Priest-Redeemer of Souls

3. The Black Keys-Turn Blue

2.  Slipknot-.5 The Grey Album

1. Foo Fighters-Sonic Highways

Sonic Highways might just be one of the most interesting musical projects I’ve heard of in years. Dave Grohl and company have elected to record their latest album all across the United States, each song being recorded at a different studio ranging from Chicago to Nashville to New Orleans, capturing the spirit and history of that city. The band decided to document this ambitious project and make a show out of it, the HBO series of the same name. In it, the band interviews talent and producers/studio heads from that respective city to understand the “so what” of where they’re from. Interviewees range from Buddy Guy, Joe Walsh from The Eagles, Josh Hommes from Queens of the Stone Age, Dolly Parton and Gary Glark Jr. are among the guests. Some of these guys also feature on the songs, providing a truly wonderful musical experience that feels fresh and also feels like Foo Fighters.

Best Films

Consideration to: Birdman, Whiplash, dThe Imitation Game and Foxcatcher for critical praise, I just haven’t gotten around to seeing them yet.

10. The Drop

9. X-Men: Days of Future Past

8. Grand Budapest Hotel

7. Chef

6. Guardians of the Galaxy

5. Fury

4. Gone Girl

3. The Raid 2

“Ow my body hurts.” That’s what I was telling myself after leaving the screening for The Raid 2. The Raid 2 is essentially Singing in the Rain for action films, the pinnacle of the genre. This is quite simply, without a doubt, one of the best action films ever made. The combination of raw and jaw dropping action with gorgeous cinematography, an engaging story and hero to root for make the Raid 2 quite the treat. You don’t really need to see The Raid 1 for the sequel, those plot points get resolved within the first 10 minutes or so (you should still see The Raid 1). But fans of action and dramatic crime films like Infernal Affairs should definitely catch this one.

2. How To Train Your Dragon 2

I have not been this engrossed in an animated feature in quite some time. Unlike most animated films these days, HTTYD2 does not treat its audience like morons and it is not afraid to bring up some dark and mature themes in its story. The result is a fun, engaging and emotionally charging animation adventure that reminded me a bit of The Lion King with its tone, only this time featuring the dragon rider Hiccup and his winged mare, Toothless. Combined with a stellar voice cast and you got the best animated in years (sorry Frozen).

1. Boyhood

One of the most ambitions films ever made, Boyhood follows the life of boy Mason as he grows up from age 6 til age 18. Unlike most films about a life, the film doesn’t recast the actors as time goes on. Instead, director Richard Linklater and his team kept the same cast over 12 years, allowing for a truly unique vision that is unlike anything we as audiences have seen before. We literally see this boy become a man before our eyes and the story, subtle touches of humanity and realism help make his journey one worth taking.

Best Foreign Language

Mommy, The Raid 2

Worst Films

Transformers: Age of Extinction

The Legend of Hercules

Biggest Disappointment

Interstellar

Oh I’m gonna get a bit of heat for this one. But Christopher Nolan’s space odyssey couldn’t lift off to greatness. It reached for the stars and it got there, but it left logic and character at the shuttle bay. Some of the choices the characters make in this film defy logic and reasoning, making me question the credibility of the film. There are also serious and mind baffling plot holes in the film which took me out of the experience. Couple this with sub par acting from the supporting cast and a facepalm worthy ending and I got a mixed experience. However, the journey to the end as a viewer joining in on the actual expedition was a thrill, the practical effects and IMAX interstellar travel were a treat to behold. This film truly would loose some value on the smaller screens.

Best TV

If you could watch only one series in 2014, it’d have to be True Detective. The first season in this HBO crime anthology sees detectives Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey working a serial killer case in the 90s.  The show is cross cut with events in 2012, allowing for a wide character arc for both leads. It is a dark, serious and brutal show with the leads giving some of their best acting to dates.

Best in Gaming

Gaming was kind of unimpressive in 2014, overall nothing really stood out with the exception of these few games.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS

Our favorite brawler is back and it feels so….right. It’s been a great year for Nintendo and this would be the crowning achievement on an already fantastic lineup of games. The familiar combat and lovable characters, unique stages and new features make this an instant must buy for fans.

The Evil Within

It’s been awhile that a survival horror game has conveyed a sense of terror and dread. The Evil Within does just that, offering a Resident Evil 4 type of tension but in a sick and twisted world where the gamer never truly feels safe. You better enjoy the colour red as crimson buckets get spilled in this goretastic survival horror game.
